The pull and repeat mechanism is activated by a pulley. This unlocks and rotates a barrel. Simultaneously, the barrel moves forward by an amount determined by a lever and a stepped projection on the front plate. At the same time, the hour rack is rotated and a plate on its stem engages with the appropriate hour on the snail. Upon release, projections on the barrel trip the hammer of the hour bell. A second group of pegs seen at the lower right of the barrel interact with the hammer tails of the quarter striking bells as follows: not at all for the first quarter, once for the second, twice for the third and three times for the fourth quarter.
